Thorsmork Highlands

SEASON

DURATION

Valley of thor is an undeniably exotic and a marvel of nature. The drive to the interiors of highland will take your breath away. They even have hiking treks between Fimmvörðuháls and Laugavegur, starting from Skogafoss. But walking 8-10 hours of the terrain is not easy. So we recommend taking our Super-Jeep private tour here. Stakkholtsgjá valley offers a relatively easier hike, the trail is short and the terrain is mostly smooth, and the trek leads to a beautiful waterfall. The highland is magical year-round. Call it a day at the Básar Hut, it is the camping hub for most of the tourists here as it not very far from the starting points of the hiking treks.

Thorsmork National Park

Thorsmork or Þórsmörk Highlands translates to the valley of Thor. It’s where the most contrasting landscape meets; green mountains with braided water streams, high glaciers, and lush green moss covered area. The valley is located between Tindfjallajökul, Mýrdalsjökull, and Eyjafjallajökull glaciers. Icelanders believe Thor struck down his hammer at this very location, which created a depression that later turned into a valley. The canyon has every landscape you can wish for, frozen glacier volcanic plateaus, lush green hillsides, and the landscape is unspoiled for many years  The hiking trip takes the tourists through various treks that cross some or all of these locations: Eyjafjallajökull, Fimmvörðuháls, Magni and Móði craters, and the Seljalandsfoss waterfall. These trips take anywhere from 12 hours to 4 days to explore the Thormorks. The terrains are challenging and demand strength and fitness.

Stakkholtsgjá

A 100 meters deep and about 2 kilometers long, and several streams pour into the canyon.  The picturesque waterfall is wide at the entrance and gets narrower. The gorge is often called the hidden gem and is a Natural Reserve of South Iceland. The hike through Stakkholtsgjá is easy as the terrain is mostly plain. It starts from F249 road at the entrance of Þórsmörk valley and takes around an hour from there. Many visitors will have Deja Vu moments at Stakkholtsgjá Canyon, as it made an appearance in Game of Thrones, Season 7.

Basar

Básar is situated in the south of Krossá, near Langidalur, the starting and ending point of the Laugavegur trekking trail. During 1980 a large hut was built by Útivist, the touring Association. Shortly after that, it became the camping ground for the many hikers. Earlier the Basar area was inhabited by only a few shepherds and locals who had come to visit this part of Iceland. Now it is a popular tourist destination. Basar is dominated by small gorges, mountain scenery, glacial rivers, and countless trails.

Super Jeep

We recommend taking a super jeep with one of our local guides into Thorsmork. Super jeeps are large, highly modified, four-wheel drive, all-terrain vehicles equipped with massive suspension systems and tires ranging from 38″ to 46″ in size.  If you want to experience the wonders of Thorsmork, check out some of our luxury tours where you can see them up close.
