The weather in Iceland can change very quickly so it’s important for your to stay up to date on the weather conditions, especially during the winter months. Weather conditions can be checked out on the Icelandic Meteorological Office website, which is the most accurate weather forecast available. The website’s different maps display temperature, wind speed, precipitation, and even avalanche forecasts. When driving in Iceland a pair of good sunglasses are a must!
The Ring Road or Route 1 goes all the way around Iceland, about 1332 KM and it would take you between 12-14 hours without any stops.. We don’t recommend that! For you to be able to enjoy and experience the stops and places along the way we would recommend taking 6 – 10 days to go all the way around Iceland.
To drive in Iceland you do not need an international driver’s license unless your domestic license may be hard to understand in Iceland. If your license is written in simplified Chinese, Arabic or any other non-roman alphabet, then you will need to procure either an English version or an International license.
All the major roadways including the Ring Road are paved and accessible all year around. Make sure you only drive on paved roads, that way you shouldn’t have any problems.
The standard speed limits in Iceland are:
In Iceland the cars are driven on the right side of the road and like in most European countries. You should never drink and drive and make sure you always have your seat belts on. If you need to use the cell phone during driving make sure it’s connected to a hands-free device. The main headlights must be kept on at all times, even during daylight hours. Off-road driving is strictly forbidden as it destroys the environment and natural landscape and can result in a fine up to 5,000 USD. Never park or drive in the middle of the road, always find a safe parking spot or area if you need to stop to enjoy the Icelandic Landscape or Northern Lights.
You have your own rental car that gives you the freedom to travel when and where you like, we do all the planning and booking for your stay in Iceland so you don’t have to do any research and can enjoy a stress-free journey in Iceland. Our self drive tours are ideal for people who like to travel at their own pace and still experience luxury and comfort.
All our self drive luxury tours includes a rental car complete with:
If you need to add anything else such as child seats and insurance upgrades please contact us and we would be happy to help you.
You can drive on all roads in Iceland except F-roads or mountain roads that are only accessible for special off-road vehicles. Many of the top Icelandic tourist attractions are located along the Ring Road or other paved roads. The main roads are accessible with a regular car and easy to drive.

Our trip was Amazing!!! Everything from the first email to get information to getting dropped off at the airport to head home went extremely well. Our tour guide was Jonas and he was extremely punctual, spoke English very well and was very knowledgeable. Many of the sites we were visiting had long rides, but we were never bored, we were constantly being educated on Iceland and the culture. We are already talking about a summer... Read more

Tour company handled EVERYTHING!! From pickup at airport to lunch and dinner reservations to arranging itinerary and adjustments as weather required, along with getting mandatory COVID tests to return home. They made everything so easy and stress free. Jonas was a wonderful tour guide. He didn’t explain everything until after we were at a sight, so we’d have the element of surprise and WOW!! Family of 4 adults all enjoyed immensely. All of the excursions they included on our itinerary were fabulous-from The Blue Lagoon to The Lava Center to a local farm for breakfast. And let’s not forget the waterfalls and black sand beach. Hotels they selected were wonderful as well. Wonderful trip-would highly recommend Deluxe... Read more

My wife and I are just back from 10 wonderful days in Iceland. Our trip was expertly choreographed from start to finish by Deluxe Iceland. Viktor patiently worked to construct an itinerary that suited us and continued to work with us during our private tour as the famously unpredictable Icelandic weather conditions dictated "on the fly" changes. Tryggvi (sic), our private tour guide and driver, was a supremely knowledgeable guide who entertained us every day with his knowledge of and enthusiasm for “everything” Iceland – history, culture, food, glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls, geysers, hikes, horses and even trolls!
So many highlights! Hard to choose one – hiking up a volcano; caving underneath a glacier; glimpsing the Northern Lights at Hotel Ranga, the helicopter ride over an erupting volcano, the in-water couples massage at the Retreat at the Blue Lagoon, the best fish and chips ever, …We both felt so rejuvenated after our Icelandic adventure; Thank you Viktor, Trggvi, all at Deluxe Iceland and the Icelanders who made it all so... Booking through Deluxe Iceland was great. We worked with Viktor and Sig who created a custom tour based on our interests. They handled everything (except the flights) to come up with a great experience for our first time to Iceland. Our guide, Jonas, spent 9 days with us and made sure everything was perfect. Last-minute changes were no problem. Recommendations for lunch and dinner were great even with special dietary requests. Top-notch, highly recommend... Read more

What an amazing experience! Traveled with my mother (in her 70s). We selected the Winter Wonderland tour and customized it to our interests and skill level. We had the same tour guide the whole trip - Lulli who was wonderful. All the hotel selections were amazing (Hotel Borg, Fosshotel, Hotel Ranga, and Blue Lagoon Retreat Hotel). We spent the first couple of days exploring Reykjavik on our own and then toured Fagradalsfjall Volcano, Seljalandsfoss & Skogafoss waterfalls, Reynisfjara Beach, Vatnajökull National Park, Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, Diamond Beach, LAVA Center, Snowmobiling on Eyjafjallajokull Glacier, the Golden Circle, Reykjanes Peninsula, & Blue Lagoon. Everything about the experience was exceptional. The vehicle was very comfortable and had WiFi. All the lunch spot recommendations were delicious for local flavor. We felt very safe and taken care of the whole time. Highly... Read more

Word can not express how happy we are with our experience working with Deluxe Iceland. My husband and I took this trip to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary and wanted it to be the best trip ever and Deluxe Iceland and our guide, Jonas, made sure they made that happen. Everything was meticulously planned out and Jonas has a love for and a knowledge of his country that shines through on each adventure he takes you on! From chasing and finding the Northern Lights on our first day, to relaxing and staying at the Retreat spa and hotel our last night and everything in between you can't go to Iceland and NOT use Deluxe Iceland! Thank you Viktor and Jonas for making this an anniversary to... Read more
